MatterFact · A Client Portal for UK Law Firms. Every Matter, Made Clear.

Clients rarely leave over the legal work.

They leave over the weeks without an update, the bill they didn’t see coming, and the feeling that chasing their own case has become their job. By the time you hear about it, the next instruction may already have gone somewhere else.
MatterFact gives every client a live view of their matter, inside the systems your firm already uses, so the people paying you are never the last to know where things stand.
The problem

The quiet client is the one to worry about.

Ask a firm what keeps clients loyal and you’ll hear about outcomes – the deal that closed, the case that was won. Ask clients, and outcomes barely come into it. What decides whether they stay is something simpler: whether anyone kept them informed while the work was going on.

By the time that goes wrong, it’s usually too late to fix. In research we commissioned with YouGov, 93% of clients who rated their solicitor poorly said they wouldn’t come back – and those are the clients who were meant to bring you the next matter, and the referral after that.

“

Clients who switched firms were nearly three times more likely to leave over poor service and communication than over price.”

“

Firms assume barely
1 in 10 clients chase them for updates. It’s closer to 1 in 3.”

The Solution

A client portal that works inside your existing systems.

MatterFact gives every client one place to see their whole case as the work happens – day-to-day progress, key dates and documents, through to messages and costs.

It sits inside the case management system your firm already uses, so the client’s view stays current on its own, without anyone stopping to update it by hand. There’s no second system for your team to learn and nothing to rip out; they keep working exactly as they do now.

And it carries your name, not ours.  Clients see your branding, your firm, down to the individual fee-earner they’re dealing with. It’s built to read as a natural part of the service you already provide, not a piece of software bolted on from outside.

Features

Everything a client needs, all in one place.

Progress they can see for themselves

A live case overview, a timeline of what’s happened and what’s next, the key dates that matter, and a running list of anything still outstanding. When a client can answer “where are we up to?” without emailing anyone, they stop needing to ask – and in our research, 6 in 10 firms admitted their clients currently have no way to check for themselves.

A direct line to the person doing the work
A secure inbox connects each client straight to their fee-earner, with everyone else on the matter listed alongside. Messages sit against the case rather than buried in a personal inbox, so nothing gets lost and there’s a clear record if a query (or a complaint) ever comes back.
The money, in plain view

A financials overview shows what’s been spent, invoiced and still owed, and clients can settle fees or pay on account securely in the app. One in five clients in our research had no visibility of their costs at all, and a surprise invoice is one of the quickest ways to turn a settled client into a complaint.

Onboarding without the paperwork
New clients can complete onboarding and legal forms directly from their phone, answering plain, mobile-friendly questions instead of printing something out just to sign it. Documents can be uploaded and reviewed the moment they’re needed, so a matter opens cleanly rather than stalling while you wait on paperwork.
Compliance you can see at a glance
An ID and AML dashboard keeps identity and anti-money-laundering checks current as the matter moves, so your team can see exactly where every case stands without having to reconstruct it at the end.
Client Experience Scoring Tool

How sure are you  of your clients’ experience?

Most firms believe they communicate well. Few have ever checked that against what their clients experience, and that's where loyalty is won or lost.

This assessment gives you a read on where your firm stands on the things clients leave over – communication and billing transparency – and how that compares to other UK firms.

and a benchmark you can act on.
Fit

No rip-and-replace.
No migration project.

Because MatterFact works with the system your firm already runs on, there's no data to move, no parallel system to maintain, and no months-long rollout to survive first.

Your existing case data feeds the client’s view automatically, so what they see is always current, and getting started is a setup, not an overhaul.

It works across desktop and mobile, so clients can check in wherever they are.

Security

Client data is the first thing your IT team will ask about.

So it's the first thing we built for.

Client information sits behind the same standard of security we’re independently audited against every year (ISO/IEC 27001:2022), with encrypted messaging, secure payments and access controlled by role. Your IT and compliance teams can request the full security detail whenever they want to look under the bonnet.

Research

The research behind matterfact

MatterFact wasn't built on a hunch. We commissioned The Cost of Silence, an independent study into the gap between what UK law firms believe they deliver and what their clients actually experience.

It runs across 1,373 people in three nationally representative YouGov surveys, covering the public, business clients and law firms themselves, and its findings line up with what the Legal Ombudsman and the SRA have been seeing in complaints for years.

One finding sums up why MatterFact exists: firms are consistently confident they keep clients well informed, and clients consistently disagree. MatterFact is aimed at closing that exact gap.

No. It sits on top of the system you already use and draws case data through, so there’s nothing to migrate and no duplicate data entry. Your team keeps working where they already work.
MatterFact has both a desktop version, and a mobile app, so your clients can use it however they prefer.

need input

Yes, all client data is held in the UK.
Clients can pay invoices or pay money on account securely inside MatterFact, using Stripe, one of the most widely used payment platforms. Payments are processed by Stripe, so card details are never held by MatterFact or your firm. We’re adding support for more payment providers, so if your firm already uses a particular provider, let us know.
Yes. Because it works with your existing system rather than replacing it, there’s no large rollout to absorb, which makes it practical whether you’re a handful of fee-earners or a large practice.
Pricing depends on the size of your firm, so we tailor it rather than publish a single figure. Talk to us and we’ll show you exactly what MatterFact would cost for your firm.
It launches at LegalGeek in October 2026.
